The capital of Chile is Santiago and it is the largest city in the country and a popular destination for backpacking. The city caters for all kinds of tourists, offering anything from 5-star hotels to hostels and apartments for rent. Most European and North American tourists will find the city relatively cheap to eat out, get around and stay in.
The main airport in Santiago is Aeropuerto Internacional Arturo Merino Benítez and it receives domestic and international flights. You can take a taxi or bus from the airport to Santiago Centre which is just 16 miles away, however, the journey may take longer than you think because of hectic traffic. This airport is the main hub for Lan Chile Airlines.
Transport in Santiago
Hiring a car is only advisable if you are thinking of going on a day trip out of the city. Travelling by car during the week is stressful as traffic is congested and it is not easy to find somewhere cheap to park.
The city has an efficient but somewhat overcrowded transport system. The green micros, or buses to the English speaker, will take you just about anywhere in the city. You can buy a “bip” card at any metro station and charge it up to travel on the buses and metro in the city centre. This works outs slightly cheaper than buying a single fare and you pay one rate to travel on buses or trains for two hours with the bip card.
Santiago is famous for its clean and frequent trains which comprise the city’s metro system. The metro is the fastest way to get around the city. However, be warned that it can get very crowded during peak-hours. You can use your bip card to travel on the metro and the fares are more expensive during the peak-hour.
Money
You shouldn’t have any problems finding a cash machine in the city. The maximum withdrawal is $200,000 pesos per day. If you need to change money, the best place to do so is on Agustinas street which is between Bandera and Ahumada. Here you will find lots of Foreign Exchange Offices and they offer the best rates.
Safety and Security
Santiago is renowned for being one of the safest cities in South America. However, don’t take valuables with you when sightseeing in the city and try not to look like a tourist, especially if you are travelling alone or as a couple. The best thing is to keep your wits about you and you shouldn’t have any problems. If someone in the street asks you for money don’t bring your wallet out in front of them. It is best to walk away or give some loose change from your pocket.
